Coal tar asphalt, a type of artificial asphalt, is generally a viscous liquid, semi solid, or solid. The color is black and shiny. The residue from the distillation process of coal tar tar, which removes liquid fractions, accounts for approximately 50% to 60% of the total amount of coal tar and is a bulk product. The current national standard is GB/T 2290-2012.

       For the production of carbon electrodes, the degree of carbon graphitization in coal tar pitch is relatively high, and it can be used as electrode material, as well as as as as a sizing agent and binder.
